Foundation Masterclass for 16 - 19 year olds: Week 1
An intensive summer course for young artists aged 16-19, thinking about heading to art school. This is a unique opportunity to hone skills, build a portfolio, and experience art school first hand.
Visit summer exhibitions at London galleries / Draw the vibrant artistic area of Trinity Buoy Wharf / Use imagination to bring drawings to life / Experiment with painting / Create animations / Fill sketchbooks / Discover mono-printing / Receive portfolio advice
The course focuses on observational drawing, painting, animation and printing with an emphasis on developing students’ skills and abilities and preparing a portfolio for Foundation or Degree application. Individual guidance is given on art school applications, personal statements and portfolio preparation, alongside discussion and group critiques.
Tuition comes from the Royal Drawing School’s distinguished faculty who teach on the Schools Fine Art Foundation course, The Foundation Year. All tutors are practising artists.
The intention of the Foundation Masterclass course is for students to progress from one week to the next, however, students unable to commit to both weeks will be able to book on to either Week 1 or Week 2. The course will run from our studios in Trinity Buoy Wharf, a thriving community of artists and creative industries in Docklands, where The Royal Drawing School also delivers The Foundation Year.
The Foundation Masterclass: Week 1
This week students will draw, paint and print from an unclothed life model in the studio, looking at line, tone, colour and composition. They will be encouraged to experiment with these different media, trying out new techniques and developing new skills. Students will visit Tate Modern to draw from the collections and installations, even attempting to ‘draw’ sound. The day will end with a detailed critique and students will gain a good grounding in art history and contemporary practice. Students will also have an introduction to printmaking methods, with opportunities to make mono-prints working in the Foundation Year print room. The week culminates with an exploration of the lively and ever-changing area around Trinity Buoy Wharf including a panoramic drawing workshop and an introduction to narrative in landscape drawing using a concertina book format. Students will have individual advice sessions on art school applications, including portfolio preparation and personal statements.
